iPod Shuffle 3rd Gen - A Big No-Go

Here at the BEL.com headquarters, some (like myself) live by the iPod and loseless audio formats and others see it as no more than a doorstop or paperweight that will always be inferior to vinyl and needle. We also go back on forth on latest Apple innovations (surprisingly, I'm not usually a fan outside of the iPod and most of the others that reject the iPod rush out to get the new MacBook Pro).

When we heard about the new iPod shuffle that was smaller than a flash drive and could talk to you, both camps got excited. Sadly, just about everything has failed to live up to expectations in practice.

The first thing that you notice is that besides the Power/Repeat/Shuffle switch, all of the controls have been moved to the headphones. This reduces your choices of headphones to, well, one. Also, the controls take a bit of practice to get used to, there's a series of push-and-hold, wait, click again...etc.

Another slight annoyance is that voice. Yes, it talks to you, but it also sounds like a robot that smokes. When you have finally learned how to get it to list the playlists, you learn you can't scroll through them...you just have to wait.

Then there's value. For the near $80 mark, other media players with screens and better capacities are available. Granted, they're not Apple, but at first glance you wouldn't know this was an iPod anyway, it's a stick.

There's more nuances and quirks, but a quick Google search can find you more of those. The bottom line, save your hard earned money, this is a gimmick.

The Dangers Of Liquidation Sales

February 22, 2009 - That 60% off plasma at your locally closing Circuit City looks tempting doesn't it? Besides most of the closing stores getting far past the point of being like a page right out of "Lord of the Flies," there's some other dangers in shopping those bargain basement sales when the economy clips the wings of its once thriving business.

Anyone can browse through articles on www.consumerist.com to see horror stories of nearly every recent liquidation, but a few of them stand out.

Stories are starting to come in about customers that are buying large ticket items under the stipulation of "sold as is" but also not permitted to open the packaging. This is resulting in stories like this one and this one in which customers paid sizable amounts of money for products that were shattered, unusable and broken without them being able to find out before purchasing.

The companies that are liquidating have no further responsibility to the consumers and while not every store can be judged by the stories linked here, it makes it easy for some stores to try and move inventory quickly by any means without ethical consideration.

July 25, 2009 - Wilmington, DE - BEL.com Event Productions and The Original Wailers paid tribute to the late, great Bob Marley at the People's Festival on the Wilmington Waterfront. Some may not know that Bob Marley actually called Wilmington home away from Jamaica. The Original Wailers played a high-energy set until the lightning forced the show to shut down. Jenni Rivera @ The Wilmington Riverfront

July 24, 2009 - Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Riverfront was a blaze with flashing lights and rumbles for miles...oh, and there was a pop show too. Hours before Latina superstar Jenni Rivera was to hit the stage, 70 mph winds and raging lightning storms tore through the riverfront and the outdoor stage set up. Hundreds of anxious fans were relocated to a nearby parking garage while the storm passed. Once the "all clear" was given, BEL.com Event Productions quickly recovered the stage within minutes (the same setup that had taken the entire day earlier). The opening bands were making noise in no time and despite a travel delay for Jenni, her and her band gave the crowd the dazzling show they'd been waiting for.
